UHF/VHF Power Amplifier with the TAT8888

50 ... 1000 MHz, 1.5 W, 24 V, 450 mA

TAT8888

✈ Circuit Description - what the manufacturer says

CATV GaN Power Doubler Hybrid with the following Features :

• Excellent High Output Linearity
• High Gain 24 dB at 1000 MHz
• 50 – 1000 MHz Bandwidth
• Ultra-Low CSO/CTB/XMOD
• Low Noise
• Excellent Input/Output Match
• High Reliability

Intended for output stage amplification in CATV infrastructure applications.

✈ That mismatch thing

The circuit is intended to be used as a CATV amplifier. They are usually used in an 75 Ω system. We do not broadcast any television signal. Instead we roast atoms in a vacuum chamber. That's why we use a 50 Ω environment. When connecting anything 75 Ω to anything 50 Ω, a mismatch loss will occur. This reduces the performance of the amplifier. By using this nifty calculator, we can verify, that the mismatch loss is ≈ 0.177 dB - not be a big deal.

✈ Summary

PARAMETER VALUE MEASURED / APPLIED / GUESSED
 Supply 24 Volts DC
Current 450 mA, small signal or no signal
 Min. Freq. 50 MHz
 Max. Freq. 1000 MHz
Gain S21 23 dB, somewhere in band
Max. Power 36 dBm, measured @ 224 MHz
Input Match S11 10 dB (minimum)
Output Match S22 10 dB (minimum)

This is a very easygoing gain block. It survived many years, even tortured hard by our physics students. In case you need more output power, the supply mayst be increased. Please bear in mind, that cooling must be double checked in that case. And yes, read that datasheet and consult an engineer.

✈ Thank You !

We would like to thank the highly motivated staff of Qorvo Germany GmbH for their efforts to supply us (our research group at ETH zürich) with free samples.

ขอขอบพระคุณทุกท่าน.
